History: A Small paint and varnish company in the 1820's and 1830's, the company relocated to New York in 1870.
Valentine & Company began to specialize in vehicle finishing varnishes that were competitive with widely prized English varnishes.
Lawson Valentine's grandson, L. Valentine Pulsifer, joined the company in 1903 after receiving his degree in chemistry from Harvard University.
Three years later Pulsifer produced Valspar, the first clear varnish. The company later was renamed Valspar, which is one of the largest North American manufacturers of paint and varnish.
