Description
Excel to EbayThis will explain a simple method to list your inventory on eBay. Most keep their inventory on the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Any brand of spreadsheet will do. If you use a database, you can usually download it to Excel.
Most people start with eBay by listing items one at a time directly onto the web site. If you have more than a few, this is very time consuming. Time is you largest cost in selling on eBay. In our store, "Sell It Now on eBay", we got the time to interview the client, take pictures, and list down to seven minutes. You can read a description of the process later. This was critical to making a profit.
eBay provides a free program, TurboLister, to make large numbers of listings easier. We import our Excel list from TurboLister because making changes and aditions is much easier in Excel. If we host our own shopping cart web site, we would use something other than TurboLister for a database. When we have the list in TurboLister, we upload it to eBay.
We maintain our images on our web site in a separate directory. With this method, we can include them in our eBay listing description block and also in our own web site shopping cart system. It is simple to add a reference to one image in TurboLister from Excel but to add the other 11 possible images to TurboLister is difficult. If you don't have a web site to do this, you can add images in TurboLister before uploading the items to eBay.
This system is especially good if you have an eBay Store and want to list a new set of 150 items each month.
The method has five steps.
1. Select the items you want to list from Excel.
2. Run our program, Excel2TL.exe, to make a second file, EBAY.CSV
3. Start TurboLister, the eBay listing program
Click Import to import the EBAY.CSV file
4. Select all the rows in TurboLister and click Add to Upload
Click Upload to list the items on eBay
The cells of the spreadsheet must match the ones we use. You can change yours to match or you can copy the sheet to another one that matches the cells just before you want to list the selected items to eBay. If you don't like our selection of cell names of have a better list, let us know. A cell is the entry in a column and row. It may be "Name, Coname, Address, State, etc.".
We will now explain what each step does and how to set it up. All the files and this is done in one directory on your computer.
1. Edit the file INFOADD.TXT to tell what directory your images are in on your web site. You can edit using notepad.exe that comes with Windows. In our case, the directory is https://www.paycard7.com/inventory/images/
Type Auction or Fixed as the Selling Format
If it is Auction, type number of Days to run and the Start Price
The Reserve Price will be taken from the spreadsheet Price cell
2. Edit the file INFOADD.HTM for general information that will be added to all your listings. You can edit this file to put notes, pictures, terms, or descriptions of yourself or your company after the main listing information. The file is added to each listing.
The file is in htm format. You can create and edit it with any html editor but a simple way is to use a TurboLister entry. Open the entry, click on Description, add the text and pictures you want. Then copy and paste the hml text to the INFOADD.HTM file.
There is a sample INFOADD.HTM file you can edit.
3. In your main Excel file, for example MAIN.XLS, put a mark for the items you want to list.
4. Copy your main Excel file to a new one, LIST.XLS.
5. Sort on the eBay column.
(select all by clicking on the upper right cell, click Data -> Sort -> eBay)
6. Delete all the other rows that do not match the ones you want to list.
7. Replace all the commas (,) with a semi-colon (;).
(click Edit -> Replace -> , -> * -> Replace All)
This is necessary so the program can separate the fields in each row
8. Save the file to a new one, LIST.csv (click File -> Save As -> LIST.CSV)
You are now working with LIST.CSV.
9. Run the program EXCEL2TLT.EXE. (double click the program in your Windows File Manager)
This creates a new file, EBAY.CSV. If you want to assign the same Category
to several item, you can do it here.
10. Start TurboLister, the eBay listing program
Click Import to import the EBAY.CSV file
You may want to examine each here and Select a different Category
11. Select all the rows in TurboLister and click Add to Upload
Click Upload to list the items on eBay
A. Here is a listing of the fields we use by column name. All the entries are text, not numbers. If the entry is a number it is in text format. We only use the first 25 columns. You may add others after with no limitation on number or cell type. If your typing into a cell is longer that we indicate, that is not a problem. See the sample.xls Excel file.
